What is my MPRN number?
Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) sometimes referred to as your ‘M’ number, is a 6-10 digit number that you could be asked for when you’re switching energy supplier.
Why is my MPRN important?
Your MPRN number is unique to you and allows your gas meter to be identified so you can successfully switch energy supplier.
Why am I being asked for my MPRN?
We will only ask for your MPRN if it happens to not be in the national database. Luckily, 95% of the time it will be and so you won’t need to worry. However, if it isn’t and we do ask you for it, we’re here to help you find out where it is.
Where can I find my MPRN gas number?
When looking for your MPRN gas number it’s important to know that you won’t find it on your gas meter.
Your MPRN is located on your gas bill. If you’re asked for your gas meter number when you’re switching energy supplier this will always be your MPRN.
When searching for your MPRN you may find your ‘meter serial number’, as this can be on your gas bill too. This number is different from your MPRN and usually has fewer than 10 digits and often letters. You don’t need your ‘meter serial number’ to switch energy supplier.
It’s important to know that your MPRN number might be referred to as your ‘M’ number, or ‘Meter Point Reference Number’ on your bill. So check for these too if you can’t find your MPRN number.
If your MPRN is a little difficult to locate on your bill, you can trust us when we say – it is there! It’s a lawful requirement for your supplier to provide you with your MPRN.
Unfortunately, all supplier’s bills have different formats so your MPRN number won’t be in a certain place every time.

What if I can’t find my MPRN?
Don’t panic! There are several things you can do to find out your MPRN if it’s not obvious on your bill. You can contact your current supplier and ask them to tell you your MPRN. However, if this isn’t an option, you can also contact the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524.
